Disney and Harvey Weinstein are teaming up to bring Irish author Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl to the big screen.

Weinstein announced that Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal will executive produce the adaptation.

The Hollywood Reporter says the live-action feature will be based on the first and second instalments of the best-selling children’s series from Disney Publishing Worldwide.

Weinstein said in a statement "If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy.

"I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob De Niro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film."

The film rights to Artemis Fowl were originally bought by Miramax in 2001 when Weinstein ran the company.

The screenplay for this adaptation is set to be written by Michael Goldenberg who penned the screenplay for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The Artemis Fowl series has more than 21 million copies in print in 44 languages worldwide and focuses on 12-year-old Artemis who is a millionaire, a genius and a criminal mastermind.
