EastEnders has confirmed that Michael French is set to return to the soap. The actor will reprise his role as ladies' man David Wicks, who will be back on screen later this year.

Not much information has been revealed about the reason for his return to Albert Square, but soap bosses have promised that he will cause a stir for the other Walford residents.

The BBC show's executive producer Lorraine Newman said of the news: "It's an absolute honour to have Michael back in the show.

"Michael created an iconic character in David and with such rich history - with Ian, Bianca and of course Carol - there's plenty to explore in the future."

Rumours of a return first circulated in May, but producers did not comment on the plans until now.

French was last seen as Wicks on screen in January 2012, when he returned to the Square to say goodbye to his mother Pat before she died.

He reignited his romance with Carol (Lindsey Coulson) but departed the Square without her, leaving her heartbroken.

French originally starred in EastEnders between 1993 and 1996.

The actor is also well known for his role as Nick Jordan on Casualty, which he departed at the beginning of this year.
