Reese Witherspoon has been cast in Wild, Nick Hornby's adaptation of Cheryl Strayed's best-selling memoir.

The book recounts how Strayed, after the break-up of her marriage and death of her mother, decided to hike a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail alone.

Horby is writing the screenplay for the project, while Witherspoon, Bruna Papandrea and River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad will produce. A director has not yet been chosen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Witherspoon said: “We are so excited to be working with Fox Searchlight to bring Wild to the screen. It is an extraordinary company that continually strives to bring original, inspirational films to the marketplace.”

Wild is scheduled to begin shooting in late autumn.

Witherspoon can next be seen in the upcoming Devil's Knot, Passengers and Inherent Vice.
