Johnny Depp is in final talks to return to Alice in Wonderland 2.

English director James Bobin (The Muppets) is expected to helm the follow-up to Tim Burton's movie, according to Deadline.

Depp played the Mad Hatter in Burton's 2010 Lewis Carroll adaptation, which grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.

The news comes after it was revealed that Depp's company Infinitum Nihil has a multi-year first look deal at Disney to develop film projects he can produce at the studio.

However, insiders say that the deal with Disney was signed in March and was not announced.

Depp can currently be seen in The Lone Ranger which has struggled in the box office and is on course to lose Disney more than $150 million.
