Baby tapir joy at Dublin Zoo

Welcome to the family, lad
Welcome to the family, lad

Parents Rio and Marmaduke, big brother MJ (Marmaduke Junior) and the staff at Dublin Zoo are celebrating the arrival of a male Brazilian tapir calf, born at the Zoo on July 1.

Team leader Eddie O'Brien said: "We are delighted with the birth of the tapir calf. He is already getting on really well with his older brother MJ, who is very protective of him.

"The calf was up and about quickly after he was born; he is already more adventurous than his older brother was at his age!"

Mum Rio arrived at Dublin Zoo two years ago from Marwell Wildlife in the UK. At the time, dad Marmaduke had lost his long-term female partner Hillary, and it was hoped that he and Rio would become a couple.

Their son MJ was born at Dublin Zoo in June 2012.

The new baby tapir is Rio's second calf; Marmaduke has successfully fathered 18 calves to date.

No tapering there, then.
