A senior BBC executive has announced that the UK broadcaster would welcome the return of Absolutely Fabulous.

The classic comedy - starring Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley - recently resurfaced in a number of new specials, including one for last summer’s London Olympics.

BBC executive Shane Allen said at the Broadcasting Press Guild Lunch that Jennifer Saunders is currently working on a new project but that the "door is always open for more Ab Fab".

"Obviously," he added. "[Jennifer Saunders] is brilliant. I'd do anything she wants. [Absolutely Fabulous] is in the national fabric, isn't it? The door's wide open."

Allen clarified that if the sitcom was to return it would be for more specials, rather than a season of episodes.

He also confirmed that another much-loved sitcom, The Royle Family, could still come back for specials, despite not featuring in the schedule for Christmas 2013.
