Johnny Depp has opened up on his split from long term partner Vanessa Paradis, a year after their breakup.

The Lone Ranger star admitted to the July issue of Rolling Stone magazine that the past few years have been "a bit bumpy".

Depp explained: "The last couple years have been a bit bumpy. At times, certainly unpleasant, but that's the nature of breakups, I guess, especially when there are kiddies involved."

The former couple, who announced their breakup in June 2012, are parents to 14-year-old daughter Lily-Rose and 11-year-old son Jack.

The actor added of their split: "Relationships are very difficult. Especially in the racket that I'm in because you're constantly away or they're away and so it's hard. It wasn't easy on her. It wasn't easy on me. It wasn't easy on the kids.

"So, yeah. The trajectory of that relationship -- you play it out until it goes, one thing leads to another."

However, Depp said that he still cares for her and that their children have been "incredibly understanding, incredibly strong."
