Tom Hanks is set to star in A Hologram for the King, an adaptation of a Dave Eggers' novel.

The actor is re-teaming with his Cloud Atlas director Tom Tykwer for the project, Variety reports.

The story centres on a struggling American businessman who visits a booming Saudi Arabian city in a last-ditch attempt to escape his rising debt and pay for his daughter's college tuition.

Eggers' novel, which was published by McSweeney's last year, was a New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist.

Hanks will next be seen in Saving Mr Banks and Captain Phillips.
