Leonardo DiCaprio could play Rasputin in a future project about the Russian monk.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros has acquired a movie pitch by American Sniper writer Jason Hall, which is being developed for DiCaprio to play the Russian mystic who became an advisor to the Russian Imperial family the Romanovs.

Rasputin was embraced by Tsar Nicholas II and Alexandra as a healer for their only son, Tsarevich Alexei, who secretly suffered from haemophilia.

His influence with the family grew to the point that rivals tried several times to murder him, finally succeeding in 1916.

Steven Spielberg is being tipped to direct the film, which will be produced by Langley Park’s Kevin McCormick, DiCaprio's Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Peter Morgan.
