It has been announced that Nurse Jackie has been renewed for a sixth season by Showtime.

The Hollywood Reporter says the Edie Falco-starring series will return with Clyde Phillips remaining on as showrunner – a role he took up at the start of season five.

The show is showing an increase in audience in the US of 10% year on year.

Showtime Entertainment president David Nevins said "Nurse Jackie is an essential part of the Showtime brand, and we are thrilled with the series' growth in its fifth season.

"Under the new leadership of Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, this show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever. I’m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie’s life.”

Falco has been nominated three times and won one Emmy for her role as the troubled Jackie Payton.
