Mr Selfridge star Samuel West has expressed interest in replacing Matt Smith on Doctor Who.

The 46-year-old actor has said that it was always his dream to take on the leading role.

Speaking to The Radio Times, Samuel said: "I've always wanted to play Doctor Who.

"They can't go on getting younger forever. Every Doctor Who, almost without exception, has been younger than the previous one. Eventually we'll just have this glittering foetus - that's not going to work."

West added: "I remember when I first started watching it, he was a little bit like a frightening grandfather.  I don't want to be a grandfather but I don't think he should be cuddly."

Doctor Who will return to BBC One on Saturday, November 23 for its 50th anniversary special.
