Gael García Bernal has been cast in Jon Stewart's directorial debut Rosewater.

The Babel star will take the lead role in the film, which is based on Maziar Bahari's memoir Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival, Vulture reports.

Stewart will film the movie during his three-month hiatus from hosting The Daily Show this summer.

The book, which was co-written with Aimee Molloy, is about a journalist who left his pregnant fiancée in London to go on a short trip to cover Iran's presidential election.

Arrested from his family home, Bahari spent three months in Iran's most notorious prison, and was tortured by a man he recognised only by the smell of rosewater.

Bernal was most recently seen in the Chilean political drama No.
