Former EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook is to return to the BBC to appear on Songs of Praise.

Westbrook, who played Sam Mitchell on EastEnders, was known for her wild antics both on and off the screen during her stint on the soap in 1990s.

However in the last number of years the 39-year-old actress has turned her life around and is now a devout Christian, living a clean and healthy lifestyle.

Westbrook returned to the soapland recently to appear in Hollyoaks as ex-convict Trudy and next month she will be interviewed by David Grant on Songs of Praise.

Grant will ask the actress about how she juggles her beliefs with life in the public eye and she will also select some of her favourite hymns for the show.

Speaking about her faith, the actress said: "I have given my life to the Lord. If you had told me two years ago that I was going to be Christian, I would have laughed. I used to tell people, 'I'm way past saving'.

"But the first time I came to this church, I felt something so spiritual and amazing that I wanted to cry.

"I have realised that there have been things I have struggled with, like guilt, that I would have never found a solution for. There are things that a therapist cannot give me - that I can only get from Jesus Christ."

Westbrook can be seen on Songs of Praise on BBC One on Sunday, May 5.
