New shows from the creators of hits such as Gossip Girl, Smash, The Good Wife and One Tree Hill are in development at the E! network.

Gossip Girl team Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will reunite on a new drama called Laurel Canyon.

Based on the real-life experiences of writer Karen Croner, the show will follow the daughter of a rock star who returns to her family home after hearing that her father has died.

Songbyrd - from Smash execs Craig Zadan and Neil Meron - is based on the life of a songwriter who has written loads of love songs but can't find love.

One Tree Hill's Mark Schwahn is also working on a new project - The Royals is a contemporary family ensemble drama loosely based on William Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Ryan Seacrest is executive producer on The Stand-In - described as "a darkly psychological re-telling of The Prince and the Pauper" - while Rain Man writer Ron Bass is developing a modern-day update of Charles Dickens's Great Expectations.

Three more shows - The Shoreline from Parenthood exec Becky Hartman Edwards, dark comedy Dirty/Pretty from The Good Wife's Keith Eisner and crime drama Fortunate Son from exec producer Kevin Spacey - are also in active development.
