Janet Jackson has confirmed that she has married billionaire businessman Wissam Al Mana.

The newlyweds released a statement on the singer's website and Twitter confirming the news, but denying rumours of an "extravagant" ceremony.

The statement read: "The rumours regarding an extravagant wedding are simply not true. Last year we were married in a quiet, private, and beautiful ceremony.

"Our wedding gifts to one another were contributions to our respective favourite children's charities. We would appreciate that our privacy is respected and that we are allowed this time for celebration and joy. With love, Wissam and Janet."

The couple reportedly met when Jackson was performing in the Middle East, and they began dating in 2010.

This is Jackson's third marriage, following her first and short-lived marriage to James De Barge in 1984 and her marriage to Réne Elizondo that ended in 2000.
