Armagh actor Colin Morgan picked up the award for Best Male Drama Performance at the NTAs last night in London.

The 27-year-old Merlin star beat off tough competition from Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch, Dr Who’s’ Matt Smith and Mr Biggs’ Danial Mays.

Thrilled with the win Morgan said he had a “fantastic time” making the BBC programme which ended last year.

Other Irish interest came in the form of Dublin actor Emmett Scanlan who plays the twisted Brendan Brady on Channel Four’s early evening soap Hollyoaks. He was nominated for Best Serial Drama Performance but lost out to Coronation Street’s Alan Halsall who plays Tyrone Dobbs.

Halsall paid tribute to Bill Tarmey (Jack Duckworth), who died last year saying: "I love you pal."

Corrie also triumphed in the Best Serial Drama Category over Emmerdale, Eastenders and Hollyoaks.

Emmerdale and Hollyoaks may have gone home empty handed but EastEnders David Witts picked up the Best Newcomer Awards.

Dermot O’Leary presided over the ceremony with performances by Kimberly Walsh and X Factor contestant Ella Henderson.
