The Killing has been renewed for a third season by network AMC.
AMC initially cancelled the crime drama in July 2012, but announced on Tuesday (January 15) that the show will air for 12 new episodes on the cable channel.
Reports suggested in December that the network would order a third season as a co-promotion with Netflix, however there was no mention of such a deal in the new announcement.
The show's stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman will return for the third season, however actor Billy Campbell and Michelle Forbes will not be back.
The Killing's third season will be set a year after season two ended, and will see Sarah Linden (Enos) return to detective work to help former partner Stephen Holder (Kinnaman) solve a new case.
The Killing is based on the Danish series Forbrydelsen, which aired from 2007 to 2012.
