Former X-Files star Gillian Anderson has joined the cast of NBC’s Hannibal.
In a three-episode arc, Anderson will play the personal therapist of serial killer Dr Hannibal Lecter (played by Mads Mikkelsen).
The upcoming drama, a contemporary take on the characters from Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon novel, is written and executive-produced by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies).
It focuses on the fledgling relationship between FBI agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Lecter, his mentor.
In the decade since The X-Files wrapped, Anderson has stayed away from mainstream American TV, choosing instead to focus on projects like cable channel Encore’s Moby Dick and upcoming BBC drama The Fall.
The 44-year-old also played Mrs Havisham in the BBC’s Christmas 2011 production of Great Expectations.
