Elijah Wood has described his anticipation ahead of the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as that of “a fan”.

The actor, who reprises his Lord of the Rings role as Frodo Baggins, also suggests that The Hobbit may surprise some fans of the cinematic version of LOTR.

"It's a very different kind of story," Wood told Digital Spy. "But they've consulted original writings of Tolkien's that refer to the same time period, to incorporate more storytelling within the concept of the piece, rather than simply just adapting from the book.

"I'm very excited - I'm a fan of the book and I'm a fan of the worlds that they all and we all created, and I'm excited to revisit it."

Wood also went on to praise the casting of Sherlock star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, a character who was played by Ian Holm in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

He said: "I'm really excited about seeing Martin Freeman revive that character - what I've seen so far is absolutely brilliant, he was so perfectly cast."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14th.
