Channel 4 has axed its T4 brand of weekend programming after 14 years.

The music-driven brand, aimed at the youth market, has catapulted the careers of most of its former presenters, including Dermot O'Leary, Alexa Chung, Alex Zane, Steve Jones and Miquita Oliver.

Current presenters include Rick Edwards, Matt Edmondson, Jameela Jamil and BBC Radio 1 breakfast host Nick Grimshaw.

The broadcaster will continue with its weekend T4 schedule until December and it will then be replaced by a new music-driven format. Rumours suggest the broadcaster is looking to move into the Friday night market and will pilot three music shows next year.

Channel 4's Head of Formats, Dominic Bird, said: "Whilst T4 has historically been a much loved destination for our young audiences, its popularity has been incrementally diminished over time by the digital revolution.

"In a landscape where Channel 4 now provides E4, [The UK's] most popular channel for 16 -34 year olds, T4 has been fighting incredibly hard to maintain the cut through it once enjoyed, and now is the right time to look at more appropriate ways to serve our younger viewers."

Vernon Kay, who hosted T4 between 2000 and 2005, took to Twitter to say: 'Very sad T4 is ending. The start of great things for many many people, in front of and behind the camera!! I loved it and always will'.
