After announcing on Friday that he was leaving RTÉ, Charlie Bird made his last broadcast with RTÉ this morning, Sunday August 26, hosting the Marian Finucane Show on RTÉ Radio 1.

The former Chief News Correspondent said he isn't retiring but is moving on to new pastures.

He joined RTÉ in 1974 as a researcher in Current Affairs.

After six years he joined the newsroom as a reporter, before becoming Chief News Correspondent and later Washington Correspondent.

In a long career within RTÉ News, he covered stories in Ireland and throughout the world and has presented documentaries and radio programmes in recent years.

After his last RTÉ broadcast, Bird said: "Well, I haven't decided to retire; I've decided to move on to pastures new and to take up new challenges.

"Hopefully I will be in front of a microphone and a camera sometime, whenever – whether it's three months, six months... But I'm not disappearing off the radar."
