Home and Away creator Alan Bateman has died.

The TV executive passed away on Saturday (August 18) following a battle with cancer, according to The Australian.

Bateman, who worked at Ten, Nine and ABC as well as Seven, was the creator of the Seven network’s long-running hit soap Home and Away.

In a statement, the CEO of Seven Network Television Tim Worner said Home and Away was Bateman’s legacy.

He said "Alan was a true television craftsman who always stuck up for program makers, sometimes against all odds, and he often had a lot of fun doing it.

"He will be remembered as the man who came up with the idea for Home and Away, a program that continues to resonate with viewers. He leaves that legacy and so much more to Australian television."

Bateman created the idea for Home and Away when he stopped for ice cream on a family trip at Kangaroo Point, New South Wales and began chatting to locals who were outraged by the construction of a home for foster children in their town.
