Björk has added her voice to the growing number of musicians condemning the imprisonment of Russian girl-punk band Pussy Riot.
The band were arrested for “hooliganism” in March after performing a song heavily critical of the Vladimir Putin-led government at a Moscow cathedral, and are potentially facing up to seven years in prison.
NME reports that Björk has posted a message on her website denouncing the Russian government's response: "As a musician and a mother i would like to express i fiercely dont agree with them being put to jail because of their peaceful protest performance.
"in my opinion the russian authorities should let them go home to their families and children . . . I would like to invite pussy riot to join me in a particular song on stage : which was written for all enhancement of justice ( you can guess : once , which one ) (sic)."
In her criticism of Russian authorities Bjork joins the likes of fellow musicians Sting, Jarvis Cocker, Johnny Marr, Alex Kapranos and, most notably, Madonna in their support for the jailed band.
Madonna was labelled a “former slut trying to lecture on morality" by the Russian deputy prime minister, after she sang at her recent Moscow concert with the words “Pussy Riot” written on her back.
Vladimir Putin has since called for leniency on the band, telling reporters that "there is nothing good in what they did, [but] I don't think they should be judged too severely".
