Drew Barrymore will direct The End, an apocalyptic drama, it has been reported.

The actress has signed on to helm Warner Bros' forthcoming drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The project takes a different approach to the usual end-of-the-world scenario, concentrating on the lives of several unconnected people coming to accept their fates on Earth's last day.

They include a British radio DJ who will not stop broadcasting until the end, a man fighting his way across Tokyo to be with his family and a teenage couple in the US being pulled apart by their families.

Heroes writer Aron Elie Coleite has written the script for the film, which has been in development since last year.

Barrymore will not take on a role in the film, like she did in her directorial debut Whip It in 2009.
