It has been announced that the Laura Linney-starring dramedy The Big C will return for a fourth and final season, with a change in the episode structure.

The Hollywood Reporter says the final season of the show, which is screened on Showtime in the US and on RTÉ Two in Ireland, will consist of four hour-long episodes, as opposed to the usual half-hour episodes.

Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour on Monday, Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins said: "From its inception, the show has been unique, and we've found a creative way to bring conclusion to Cathy's (the cancer patient played by Linney) story.

"It's very important with a premium network that shows be able to plan their end and do it the right way. We have a contract with our audience.

"The show began in the summer, seasons two and three were spring and winter and they've got a very interesting and novel and form-breaking way to handle where the show is going."
