The Dark Knight Rises novelisation has dropped hints about the fate of the joker.
The character who was not discussed in the third offering of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise, is briefly addressed in Greg Cox’s adaptation, according to Nuke the Fridge.
The book discloses that Arkham Asylum is almost abandoned after the introduction of the Dent Act, which sees almost all criminals sent to Blackgate Prison.
The novelisation reads: "The worst of the worst were sent here, except for the Joker, who, rumour had it, was locked away as Arkham's sole remaining inmate.
"Or perhaps he escaped. Nobody was really sure. Not even Selina."
Nolan insisted that The Dark Knight Rises would not reference the Joker at all in light of the death of Heath Ledger, who played the part of the villain in the 2008 movie.
The Dark Knight Rises novelisation is available now from Titan Books.
