Ex-Smiths guitar genius to be awarded by University of Salford
He was famously pictured outside The Salford Boys’ Club with his band mates but now ex-Smiths guitar genius Johnny Marr is set to become a real Salford lad when he’s awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Salford.
Marr has been a visiting professor at the university for five years and will be recognised at a ceremony at local arts centre The Lowry on July 19, SalfordOnline reports.
"I'm very pleased to be given an honorary degree by Salford University,” says Marr. "I've enjoyed working with the students in my capacity as visiting professor and hopefully we can find some more opportunities for creative work in the future."
Marr formed The Smiths with Morrissey in 1982 and after their split in 1987 he has been a member of Electronic, Modest Mouse, The The and The Cribs.
He recently revealed that while he still speaks to bassist Andy Rourke, he has no connection with Morrissey or drummer Mike Joyce.
