Johnny Depp may be a master of transformation for his various roles, but the actor donned a different hat when he jumped on stage to perform with The Black Keys at the MTV Movie Awards last night.

Depp showcased his musical abilities on the electric guitar at the ceremony, held in the Gibson amphitheatre in California, as he joined the band on stage to strum along to Gold On The Ceiling and Lonely Boy.

Depp was present at the ceremony to receive the MTV Generation Award, which was presented to him by Aerosmith musicians Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

The 48 year-old actor joked upon receiving the award that "This is the get out of the business award. Based on watching all of those clips there is clearly something wrong with me".

The actor received the award after playing one song with the duo, whom he dubbed "up-and-coming legends" before playing their second song together.

Members of the band praised the actor, speaking to MTV.com they said "He's a really good guitar player. He was prepared. He's got the chops". The band also didn't rule out a possible collaboration with Depp somewhere along the road in the future.

This isn't the first foray into music for the actor, he has played music for Oasis, Marilyn Manson and Shane MacGowan, as well as playing guitar for some of his film roles, including Chocolat.
