Nurse Jackie has been officially renewed for a fifth season by Showtime.

The comedy-drama - currently running on Fridays on RTÉ Two - stars Sopranos actress Edie Falco as ER nurse Jackie Peyton, and will resume filming in late 2012.

Nurse Jackie co-creators and showrunners Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius recently announced that they had quit the show at the conclusion of its fourth run.

The pair will be replaced by former Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips for season five, Deadline reports.

Phillips will now serve as an executive producer alongside Falco, Richie Jackson and Caryn Mandabach.

"Clyde brings a unique combination of skills in both comedy and drama, and he is a master at making entertaining and compelling television," said Showtime's president of entertainment David Nevins.

"We are so thrilled with the series' performance this year, and we know that with the incomparable Edie Falco in front of the camera, the fifth season of Nurse Jackie will be even better."
