Debra Messing has spoken about her recent split from husband Daniel Zelman, saying it was "traumatic"

The actress split from Zelman in December 2011 after ten years of marriage, and twenty years in a relationship. They do not plan to divorce immediately.

Messing told Ladies Home Journal: "Twenty years. It's a very long time. I think the institute of marriage is a noble thing.

"I think the idea of a partner for life is incredibly romantic. But now we're living to 100. A hundred years ago people were dying at age 37. Till death do us part was a much different deal."

The Will & Grace star also described the difficulties of moving from Los Angeles to New York with Zelman in order to bring up their 8-year-old son Roman.

She said: "I had to find a school for my second grader. We didn't have a home, we didn't have furniture. It was literally moving here with nothing but faith and hope. It was traumatic because every aspect of my life was going through a huge change."
