Hundreds of people attended the funeral of The Dubliners' Barney McKenna in Trim, Co Meath today, Monday April 9.
A lone piper led the cortege and President Michael D Higgins, the Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams and singers Damien Dempsey and Declan O'Rourke were among the mourners.
The 72-year-old tenor banjo player, who was the last surviving member of the original Dubliners, died suddenly on Thursday.
The Examiner reports that during the music-filled service at St Patrick's Church, Fr Mark Mohan paid tribute to the musician's life and influence.
"The last few days with Barney's passing has changed the course of the McKenna life, it has changed also Dublin, Ireland and indeed the music world at large," he said.
"Barney touched so many and left thousands with happy hearts.
"Your stories, your words and your memories are to be treasured."
Barney McKenna is survived by his partner Tina, sister Maria and brother Sean Óg.
