One Direction made history as the first UK (and Irish) group to debut at No 1 in the US with their first album. Up All Night topped the Billboard chart, a feat that eclipses its nearest contender, the Spice Girls 1997 debut album Spice which only debuted at No 6.
The band’s group Twitter account today posted: "Congratulations to One Direction for coming in at #1 on the U.S. @billboard charts.Thank you to all who've been there from day one. 1DHQ X"
One Direction’s recent promotional ten date tour of the US and current jaunt across Canada has stirred phenomenal interest akin to Beatlemania in its heyday. Two weeks ago they performed on the ratings-topping Today Show and since then they have scooped their own show on Nickleodeon.
The teen band includes Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Mullingar’s finest, Niall Horan.
