Stephen Hawking has reportedly signed up for a guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory.

The famous theoretical physicist is said to have filmed scenes for the CBS sitcom's episode that will be aired in the US on April 5.

According to TV Guide Canada, Hawking's cameo sees him have a "run-in" with Sheldon (played by Jim Parsons).

The 70-year-old cosmologist had previously been approached to appear on The Big Bang Theory, but he was said to be too ill to film.

No stranger to the small screen, he has previously starred in The Simpsons, Futurama and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Leonard Nimoy is set to feature in the episode prior to Hawking's as his Star Trek character Spock.

In further guest star news, Digital Spy has reported that Martha Stewart is set to guest-star on a coming episode of sitcom 2 Broke Girls.
