Silent film, The Artist, has won six Cesar awards, France’s answer to the Oscars.

The black and white paean to the heyday of the silent movies won Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Director at last night’s ceremony in Paris.

But in what was probably the shock of the night the Best Actor gong went to Omar Sy, star of the blockbuster Intouchables (Untouchable). In doing so Sy pipped the hotly tipped leading man of The Artist, Jean Dujardin who has won the category at Cannes, the Golden Globes and the Baftas - and is also a co-favourite (with George Clooney) at tomorrow night’s Academy awards.

"(The Artist) is a film that started out at the very bottom, it's a film nobody wanted to make, and now we are right at the top. It's a beautiful story," director Michael Hazanavicius said, receiving his prize.

The Artist is nominated for 10 Academy Awards and is a frontrunner for the Best Picture award.
