Michael Douglas: Tipped to present the Best Picture at next Sunday's Oscars

Veteran actor Michael Douglas will present an award at next Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony. The 67-year-old, who is recovering from throat cancer, has made very few public appearances in recent times. Now he is being tipped – the Academy’s lips are usually sealed on who presents what on the night – to present the Best Picture Award.

Douglas, the son of screen legend Kirk, has already two Oscars on his mantlepiece – the first as producer of the 1975 Best Picture, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and a Best Actor statuette for Wall Street (1987).

Other presenters already confirmed for the biggest night in Hollywood’s calendar include Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks, Tina Fey, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

Last year, Douglas presented an award at the Golden Globes, and joked: “There’s got to be an easier way to get a standing ovation.”

Douglas’s next role will be as Liberace opposite Matt Damon in the HBO film Behind the Candelabra, to be directed by Steven Soderbergh this summer.
