Creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have both confirmed that there will be a third season of Sherlock.

Following last night’s final episode of the second season – which has proved to be another ratings-winner for BBC One - the pair took to Twitter to reveal the news that the modernised version of the legendary sleuth would continue.

There had been some debate over the future of Sherlock as the BBC remained tight-lipped about further seasons earlier this week when it confirmed the renewal of dramas Luther and Death in Paradise.

Moffat wrote: "#sherlock Yes of course there's going to be a third series - it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!", while Gatiss tweeted: "Gotcha! And of course there'll be a third series! It was commissioned at the same time as series two!!"

Last night's episode closed with Sherlock's companion, John Watson (Martin Freeman), convinced that Sherlock had killed himself after a showdown with his arch-enemy Jim Moriarty played by Irish actor Andrew Scott. The audience then saw Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) watching on as Watson visited his grave.
