W.E. had its film premiere in London last night where director Madonna said that she hoped one day to be "swept away by a knight in shining armour".

Speaking about the film at the Odean Kensington, Madonna said: "This movie shows that there is no such thing as perfect love, that all love requires compromise or sacrifice”.

However talking to Graham Norton earlier in the evening, she said: "If you're a romantic like me, and every girl I know is, every girl wants to be swept off her feet by a knight in shining armour."

The film looks at the romance between Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII played by Andrea Riseborough and James d'Arcy, both of whom attended the premiere.

Madonna added: "I hope people will leave the film thinking 'Wow', with a whole new perspective on the story."

Riseborough, 30, spoke about Madonna's enthusiasm for the project: "She was so passionate and so clear about the story she wanted to tell, and was well equipped and prepared to tell it, that after that point, I didn't need to think twice".

The 53-year-old mother of four who directed, co-wrote and co-produced the film, arrived in a floor-length black Jean Paul Gaultier gown and feathered Dolce & Gabbana cape.

W.E. opens in Ireland on Friday, January 20.
