The Directors Guild Awards, which is traditionally the most prophetic pre-Oscar prize night of the season, has raised a lot of eyebrows with its list of five candidates for Best Director of the year.
Along with expected nominees such as The Artist's Michel Hazanivicius, Hugo's Martin Scorsese, The Descendants' Alexander Payne, and Midnight in Paris' Woody Allen, the DGA named The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo's David Fincher.
This means that other likely contenders such as War Horse‘s Steven Spielberg and The Tree of Life's Terrence Malick missed out – making it a four-in-a-row sweep of pre-Oscar Guild award blanks for the reclusive Malick.
Conversely, it’s an impressive pre-Oscars for the English language version of Dragon Tattoo, which has now been nominated by the Directors, Writers, and Producers' Guilds.
