The singer Bridie Gallagher has died at the age of 87. She was known internationally as 'The Girl from Donegal', and played venues all over the world during a 50-year career.

Bridie Gallagher was born in Creeslough, Co Donegal but moved to Belfast as a young woman where she began her recording career.

Her single, A Mother's Love's a Blessing, became an instant hit and she soon began touring internationally.

During the 1950s and 60s her audiences were swelled by people who had emigrated from Ireland and wanted to be reminded of home.

She was also known for her glamorous costumes and hairstyles - bringing a touch of international showbiz style to the Irish music scene.

Singers including Daniel and Margo O'Donnell say she paved the way for them internationally.

But her friend Margo says that despite her international fame, one of Bridie Gallagher's proudest days was when her home village of Creeslough held a public celebration for its most famous daughter.
