Pam St Clement's final episode of EastEnders was the most viewed show in the UK as the BBC soundly thumped ITV in the ratings.
The death of St Clement's character Pat Evans attracted 9.76m (36%). Following EastEnders, the second season opener of Sherlock pulled an impressive 8.75m (30.9%) and was followed by an Absolutely Fabulous special that drew 7.12m (28.3%).
The Beeb’s main rivals ITV peaked at 3.45m (12.5%) with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - making it the least-watched UK terrestrial premiere of the franchise. Channel 4’s most-viewed show was The Hotel, which attracted1.78m (6.2%).
Overall, BBC One soundly beat ITV1 in primetime with 30.2% to 11% (+1: 1.6%). BBC Two was in third place with 9.4%, ahead of Channel 4 (5.1%) and Channel 5 (3.3%).
