BBC's EastEnders was the big winner in the UK television Christmas Day ratings, beating ITV's Coronation Street and Downton Abbey.

The Press Association reports that overnight viewing figures show that the BBC soap had an average audience of 9.9m, compared to second-placed Coronation Street's 9m (9.3m including ITV1+1 viewers) and fourth-placed Downton Abbey's 8.1m (8.6m including ITV1+1 viewers).

However, the peak-time gap between BBC and ITV has narrowed to 1.4%: ITV1 had 29.7% of the TV audience between 7pm and 10.30pm, while BBC1 had 31.1%.

The Christmas Day Top Five was completed by Doctor Who (8.9m) in third and Strictly Come Dancing (7.5m) in fifth.
