Chris Meloni, who left Law & Order: Special Victims Unit earlier this year, will become a series regular on True Blood. It will be the New Yorker’s first role since he handed in his badge as Detective Elliot Stabler in the long-running Dick Wolf police procerdural.

Meloni will join the cast of the bloodsucking HBO drama in season five as an "ancient powerful vampire who holds the fate of Bill and Eric in his hands."

The 50-year-old, who played Eddie Carbone in A View From The Bridge at the Gate Theatre in Dublin, previously played Chris Keller in HBO’s uncompromising prison drama, Oz, and is currently in negotiations to play a major role in the forthcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel.
