Last night saw The X Factor delayed by technical difficulties which sent social networking sites into overdrive.

Viewers had to wait 15 minutes as they tuned in to see the final six perform a Lady Gaga V’s Queen tribute to discover whether Amelia Lily, James Michael, Jonjo Kerr and 2 Shoes would be returning, after Frankie Cocozza's exit earlier this week.

During the delay, ITV screened a montage of some of the series' more notable auditions, including those of Janet Devlin, Sami Brookes, Johnny Robinson, Jade Richards and Goldie Cheung.

X Factor announcer Peter Dickson was amongst those discussing the issue on Twitter: "Omg! We have technical difficulties. People scrambling all over the studio now, hopefully on air soon."

The official X Factor Twitter account later clarified: "The studio is ready and raring to go... but there is a technical failure at BT Tower."

When the show began, Dermot O'Leary apologised on behalf of the show's producers and said that the delay was "beyond our control".

An ITV spokesman said: “The problem, which was caused by a power failure at BT Tower and was outside ITV’s and the producers’ control, was resolved as quickly as possible. We apologise for the disruption to programming”

A BT spokesman said: “There was an unusual power spike...which disrupted services from the BT Tower for a short time."
