Outspoken singer Sinead O'Connor has claimed that watching X Factor is "excruciating" and that judge Gary Barlow has "a horrible way of looking at people".

"If he was my son I’d be having a serious word with him about the way he’s talking to people or treating people", she added.

"I don’t think the people running the show are the kind of people who think about the effect of their behaviour upon people."

O'Connor spoke about her sympathy for teenagers trying out for the show, “my daughter wants to be a singer. But I wouldn’t want to put her into a situation like The X Factor where she would be vulnerable to being looked at by someone which is a huge thing for a 15- or 16-year-old to deal with,” she said.

The singer has become a tabloid subject for erratic behaviour. She has taken to her official website to document her opinions and recently disclosed that she suffers from "regular situational depression", as opposed to bi-polar disorder which is often reported.

O'Connor will play Dublin's Olympia Theatre on December 18th.
