McCartney wed on Lennon’s birthday

Paul McCartney wed his American fiancée Nancy Shevell today, at the same venue where he married his first wife Linda 42 years ago.

The date is particularly poignant because it would have been John Lennon's 71st birthday.

According to The Telegraph, 30 guests attended the civil ceremony at Marylebone registry office in central London, where the Beatle married Linda Eastman on March 12 1969.

This will be the 69-year-old musician’s third marriage and 51-year-old Shevell's second.

The wedding reception is, reportedly, being held in the back garden of McCartney’s house in St John's Wood, close to Abbey Road studios where the Beatles recorded most of their music.

The low-key wedding is in stark contrast to McCartney’s second marriage to Heather Mills, a former glamour model whom he divorced amid bitter acrimony in 2008.

McCartney met Mills a year after the death of his first wife, Linda, who died from breast cancer and at the time, his family were said to have shared their concerns that he was rushing into the marriage.

However, it would appear that his marriage to Shevell is being warmly welcomed by his family and his designer daughter Stella reportedly created the simple yet stylish ivory dress that Shevell wore today.

McCartney’s younger brother Mike was set to be the best man at the wedding with his daughter Beatrice, seven, from his marriage to Mills, acting as bridesmaid.

McCartney is also expected to serenade his new wife with a new song that he has written especially for their wedding day, which he will unveil this evening at their north London home.
