Actress Diane Cilento dies, aged 78

Australian actress Diane Cilento has died at the age of 78.

The film star passed away in the Cairns Base Hospital in Queensland last night after battling a long illness, reports The ABC.

The actress achieved international acclaim in the 1950s and 1960s, receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1963 for her role in Tom Jones.

Other notable roles include starring with Charlton Heston in 1965 classic The Agony and the Ecstasy and with Paul Newman in the 1967 western Hombre.

In 1962 she married James Bond star Sean Connery, and the couple had a son Jason together.

They divorced in 1973, and Cilento subsequently married playwright and The Wicker Man screenwriter Anthony Shaffer until his death in 2001.

The actress starred alongside her son in her last film The Boy Who Had Everything in 1985.
