A newly brunette Kylie Minogue was yesterday celebrated for her efforts against breast cancer when she accepted an honorary Doctor of Health Science from a UK university.

The singer was diagnosed with the illness in 2005 and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. She has been cancer-free for six years.

Yesterday she was honoured by the Anglia Ruskin University in Essex, east of London, for her involvement in awareness campaigns to promote early diagnosis and other associated charity work.

Minogue, who has been in show-business for over thirty years seemed nervous and over-whelmed by the occasion, saying: "I was shaking like a leaf up there. There is so much I actually wanted to say to the students and it just didn't come out of my mouth."

Kylie, 43, donned a gown and tam as she picked up her honour at the university.

"But I wanted to say I feel really privileged to be in their company on such a special day. Perhaps in another life I would have been one of them but as it turned out I guess my university was out on the road learning as I went."

"It is a really gorgeous honour."

She added that her parents would be proud of this achievement.

"I didn't end up going to university, as much as my dad would have loved me to, so I do hope that you've got a good picture of that because when I send this home, he'll be very pleased with that."
