It was confirmed last night that Elton John has been working on a biopic of his life.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, John’s partner, David Furnish, spoke of the project which has the working title of Rocketman and has been written by their Billy Elliot collaborator, Lee Hall.
“We’ve always thought there was a wonderful cinematic opportunity to tell Elton’s life story,” Furnish told the US magazine. “But we wanted to wait until the time was exactly right. Elton feels very excited about doing it now — he’s in a very happy place in life right now and thinks it’s a good time to artistically reflect on the past.”
The film will chronicle the extraordinary life and seismic times of the iconic rock star. It will also feature a number of fantastical sequences, nor surprising considering its larger-than-life subject. With the script now ready to roll, John and Furnish are looking for a director and star (or, it is suggested, stars) to play EJ.
”Elton has lived a very extraordinary and unique life,” says Furnish of his 64-year-old spouse, who has battled his own demons in a rollercoaster career. “You can’t tell his life story without going to the dark places. We’re going to touch on those too. But at the end, we want people to come away from the cinema feeling inspired and uplifted.”
