James Cameron wants to shoot his upcoming sequels to box-office smash Avatar at 60 frames per second instead of the industry standard of 24 frames per second.

24 frames per second has been the cinema standard since the 1930s but Cameron believes it's time to move up.

Cameron first started his push for higher frame rates at CinemaCon in March where he explained that hgher framerates make for better 3D images "The 3D shows you a window into reality; the higher frame rate takes the glass out of the window,” he said.

At CinemaCon he made a demonstration of various framerates and advantages some have over others. He believes that the industry should open up a dialogue to decide whether to go with 48fps or 60fps, or indeed to adopt a dual standard.

Cameron is currently exploring shooting the Avatar sequels at a higher framerate and told The Hollywood Reporter that he would "personally favour" 60fps.

Cameron went on to say: "The reason I went down that path is because I believe it makes for better 3D. There were lots of arguments for why 48 and why 60. My feeling is if it is a software upgrade (for digital cinema projectors), do both. It doesn’t change anything at the projector; you don’t have to change the lamp house or the lenses. If you are uploading software you can upload it for 48 and 60 and let the filmmakers decide.”
