Michael Fassbender has been honoured with the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival.

Fassbender was presented with the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor for his role in Steve McQueen's Shame, in which he plays a successful businessman in New York who struggles with sexual obsessions.

Fassbender said while receiving the award: "It's just really nice when you take a chance and you do something that you think is relevant, you hope is relevant, and people respond the way you did.

"Venice is a festival with a wonderful tradition and it is humbling to win when the competition is from so many other amazing talents."

Shame is director McQueen and Fassbender's second collaboration following 2008's Hunger, in which the actor portrayed Irish hunger striker Bobby Sands.
